What is responsive web design?

How do your customers find you? By spotting your business on the high street? An advert in the Yellow Pages? Word of mouth?
It really depends what the nature of your business is, but more often than not these days, it can be the case that a company website is the first port of call for new clients.
You only get one chance to make a first impression, so how do you ensure it’s a great one?
Well, first and foremost you want to be confident that your website can be viewed as it’s meant to be. You can have the most beautifully designed website with fabulous, eye-catching and engaging content – but if it can only be viewed properly on a desktop computer, you’re cutting your potential audience in half.
But how do you ensure your website looks as good on a smartphone as it does on a laptop?
Responsive web design is the answer.
What exactly is responsive web design?
Responsive web design means that each individual webpage will automatically reconfigure to suit the screen it is viewed on.
Responsive websites have CSS and HTML coding behind them that will resize, hide, or move the content on a page so that it looks good and is user-friendly regardless of the device used to access it.
According to Ofcom, smartphones are now the most widely-used device for accessing the internet, with 71% of UK adults owning a smartphone in 2016, as compared to the 64% who have a laptop. In younger adults, smartphone ownership is even higher, with nine in 10 under-34s saying they use a mobile to get online.
So now more than ever, it is essential to have a responsive website that ALL of your customers and clients can use, wherever they happen to be when they browse.
In fact, Google believe it is so important that all websites should be viewable on every platform, they now actually rank responsive websites higher in their search results than non-responsive ones.
What’s the difference between viewing on mobile and desktop?
When you have a responsive website, your images, text, logos, menus and everything else on your site will automatically resize or reconfigure to suit the screen they are viewed on.
You can see the difference when you view our responsive website on a tablet, a smartphone and a laptop. Or, if you’re viewing on a desktop, simply drag the browser window bigger and smaller to see how our site adapts to the changing platforms.
